Description :

We are currently in search of a Product Designer (PM) to join our growing client in our North Toronto, ON location. Reporting to the Senior Product Manager, this position isresponsible for the development and implementation of product and packaging specifications required to meet customer needs in a timely and cost effective manner. The PM will work closely with the Engineering, Sales, Marketing and Art departments to ensure customer satisfaction goals are met. The PM’s job also includes ensuring that the product supports the company\'s overall strategy and goals with respect to factory relationships.

Supplier Management
• Establish and maintain close working relationships with factories while balancing this with high professionalism and the Company’s confidentiality expectations
• Communicate regularly with China (QC and factories) to resolve factory questions
• Work with China team on sourcing new products and validating factory capabilities
New Product Development and Product Specification
• Create and ensure accuracy of specification sheets and communicate product specifications to factories in a timely manner
• Confirm final specifications meet all company and customer needs and work with QC to confirm final technical dimensions
• Create meticulous work-back schedules to manage project timelines in keeping with engineering, factory, sub-supplier and ultimately customer needs
• Collaborate with Engineering to select optimal candle components to meet functional, quality, and cost objectives
• Instruction manuals: collaborate with Art Department, Engineering and factories to obtain line art, proof instructions, and provide content to Art Department
• Testing & QA - specify and manage 3rd party and in-house testing of products and packaging and work with QC and Engineering to achieve desired quality levels
Packaging Design and Specification
• Translate packaging requirements as defined by Sales and Marketing into precise specifications by collaborating with Art department for features and benefits, providing samples for pictures, proofing artwork, and ensuring packaging passes drop tests
• Communicate to QC well-defined product packaging and performance expectations to ensure factory adherence to specifications
• Direct factories on how product should be packed via product specification sheets and email communications
• Oversee confirmation of final packaging dimensions in timely manner to permit completion of orders as required by Sales
Sampling and Prototyping
• Support Sales and Marketing in preparation of customer product selection spreadsheets, in particular with costing details and weights/dimensions
• Advise China on product/sample expectations in order to minimize sampling iterations
• Oversee sample coordination by instructing factories with precise details on requirements
• Conduct rigorous inspections of samples for functionality and finish against expectations and present summarized findings to senior management
• Work closely with Engineering to evaluate first-off production samples to ensure they meet product specifications supplied to factories, as well as internal benchmarks
• Organize and confirm samples sent to customers as requested by Sales, are consistent with product line strategy, and are properly labeled and tracked
• Lead by example in storing samples in a logical and traceable manner
• In cooperation with Engineering and Global Supply Chain Specialist, oversee and control candles’ component costs as charged to by factories
• Develop and maintain deep understanding of packaging costs across factories
• Negotiate and confirm final costs with factories with an aim of achieving margin targets as advised by Sales and Marketing
• Routinize confirmation of factory costs for active skus and communicate proactively to Product Management and Sales

Skills :

Qualifications / Skills Required
• University degree with a minimum of 7 years product management experience within the home décor or giftware industries or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Knowledge of China manufacturing and sourcing environments
• Experience with product costing and supplier negotiations
• Ability to manage and execute multiple projects effectively and accurately using superior organizational skills to prioritize and balance conflicting tasks
• Adaptable to rapidly changing internal and external environments, by using a highly disciplined and detail-oriented approach to resolve ambiguous situations and ensure precision in instructions and communications
• Ability to work independently yet know when to seek input from pertinent stakeholders
• Experience and ease with working in cross functional teams by providing ideas and solutions that balance pragmatism with creativity
• Communicates with clarity, verbally one o none and in group situations, and in writing by composing clear documents and emails for both internal and external stakeholders (particularly for instances when English is not a first language)
• Excellent computer skills to produce effective reports, documents, spreadsheets and presentations with an above average proficiency in Excel
• Ability to communicate verbally in Mandarin and Cantonese is preferable
• Accommodative to occasional variability in schedule and work hours to ensure timely communication with oversees factories
• Valid passport for possible travel to China
